Narrow Water Bridge
The Narrow Water Bridge is a significant infrastructure project aimed at connectivity between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Construction commenced in May 2024 and is expected to be finished by the end of 2027.
The Narrow Water Bridge project has a long history, with efforts to construct it dating back several years. The bridge will span the narrowest point of Carlingford Lough, connecting Cornamucklagh near Omeath, Co. Louth, with Narrow Water near Warrenpoint, Co. Down. This strategic location will facilitate direct access between the Mourne Mountains and the Cooley Peninsula, promoting tourism and local economic development.
The bridge is designed as a 195-meter cable-stayed structure that will accommodate vehicular, cycle, and pedestrian traffic. It features a unique asymmetric design with a taller southern span and a shorter northern span, which includes a movable section to allow for river traffic. The southern span will be fixed, while the northern span will have a bascule mechanism, enabling it to be open for marine traffic.
Construction of the Narrow Water Bridge commenced in May 2024, with an anticipated completion date in late 2027. The project is funded by the Shared Island Fund. The bridge is not only a transportation project but also a symbol of peace and cooperation in the region, representing decades of advocacy from local communities.
